Our Story

ROCK Ministries International began in 1996 as a non-profit organization in Lake Elsinore, California, reaching underprivileged and at-risk children with the love of Jesus and helping to integrate families into local church communities. On having the opportunity to travel to Kenya with World Vision the founder, Elaine Yi, was deeply impacted by the children she saw living in poverty on the streets. She moved the ministry from California to Kenya to open a children's home for orphans who were surviving on the streets of Kisumu, a large city located on the banks of Lake Victoria. Land was eventually purchased in Malava, near Kakamega, and the children's home moved out of the big city in 2013 into the beautiful countryside where it has remained to this day. Elaine passed on the directorship in 2020 to her dear friend and accountant of 15 years, Teresa Boyani, who is carrying the vision of ROCK Ministries International into the future. On June 11, 2023 Elaine went to be with Jesus. The current project managers of ROCK Ministries International under the 501c3 of New Horizons Foundation are Kyon and Cindy Yi, the son and daughter-in-law of Elaine.

There are three facets of ROCK Ministries International that are vital to accomplishing our mission of sharing the transforming love and favor of God with families and empowering children through education to discover their God-given gifts and purpose as contributing members of their communities and ambassadors of Christ's love. The first facet is the school, Malava Christian Academy, with 180 students currently registered in classes from preschool through grade six. This is a fully accredited school, also certified by the with Association of Christian Schools International, with13 credentialed teachers who are passionate for the mission. Looking to the future, Malava Christian Academy will continue adding one grade per year until the school reaches grade 12.

The second facet is the child sponsorship program. ROCK has a fulltime social worker on staff who diligently meets the needs of families whose children have been brought to her attention by teachers, community elders, the chief, or family members. Through this program funding is provided to pay tuition, purchase school supplies, and meet other needs the social worker becomes aware of. What one will see is a community coming around these children providing a beautiful environment promoting the child's physical emotional, and spiritual health which then impacts the family, the community, and world beyond.

Starting and maintaining projects that promote self-sufficiency is the third facet of ROCK Ministries International. These will eventually become part of a family strengthening program and will include animal husbandry, farming, and small business development. The projects have already started with a stable being built and cows purchased. The cow herd has grown to five and soon will be seven as two calves are expected any day. Enough maize is grown to provide ugali for students and staff and is milled right on the property. Beans, and a variety of vegetables, are also grown along with napier grass to provide extra nutrition for the cows. God has continued to equip and supply in miraculous ways through His generous, loving people. Come join the faith adventure!

The King will reply, "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:40)
